Traditional networking has been a barrier to alignment between I&O and application developers. While developers have embraced continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) processes and other agile means to expedite development workflows, they are inhibited by reliance on their organizations’ less agile network infrastructure. Responsiveness and quick turnarounds are required for resource requests, but the reality of manual network provisioning has been another matter.

A modern network must obviously be able to scale; however, today, scalability involves not just scaling up but also scaling out elastically to support the changing needs of applications and developers. In the data center core, east-west traffic has proliferated as a result of virtualization and containerization. Modern applications are highly dynamic, driving a need for greater automated intelligence and agility in network infrastructure throughout the application and network life cycle.
