Giesecke+Devrient launches new Smart Label at CES 2025

Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) has today unveiled the G+D Smart Label, an advanced and innovative tracking solution that has the potential to revolutionize logistics, supply chain management, and asset tracking by transforming virtually any package into a fully functional IoT device. This groundbreaking technology is ultra-thin, measuring just millimeters in thickness, and is only slightly larger than a standard credit card, making it one of the most compact tracking solutions available on the market. Designed with both efficiency and affordability in mind, the Smart Label has been jointly developed by G+D in collaboration with Sensos, its trusted hardware partner, to deliver an unparalleled combination of cost-effectiveness, real-time tracking capabilities, and accuracy.

With the ability to track shipments across various sectors, the Smart Label is ideal for multiple applications, including parcel delivery, international and domestic shipping, fleet management, and high-value asset monitoring. Businesses handling luxury goods, such as high-end fashion, jewelry, and premium electronics, can leverage this solution to maintain full visibility over their products’ journey, mitigating the risks of loss, theft, or misplacement. The Smart Label’s seamless integration with existing logistics networks ensures that companies can enhance operational efficiency while reducing costs associated with misplaced or delayed shipments. Furthermore, its lightweight and flexible design means it can be effortlessly affixed to a wide variety of packaging materials without adding bulk or interfering with the contents of a shipment.

G+D provides an all-in-one solution that includes hardware, an iSIM, IoT connectivity, and an IoT platform that manages the connection and firmware updates. This makes it especially easy to use and simple to deploy. The Smart Label uses smart motion sensors that detect movement and acceleration, underpinned by GPS accuracy which has been tested to ensure sub-10m precision in ideal conditions. Coupled with customizable reporting frequencies and agile cloud-based configurations, the Smart Label can adapt to specific business needs and allow users to manage, monitor, and ensure the integrity of their assets at every stage of their journey, whether stationary or on the move.

The G+D Smart Label comes equipped with a range of cutting-edge features designed to enhance security, visibility, and efficiency across various industries. One of its standout capabilities is an open-close sensor, which provides tamper protection by detecting unauthorized access or interference with a package. This feature not only helps prevent theft but also ensures automated proof of delivery, providing businesses and consumers with real-time confirmation that their shipments have remained sealed and intact throughout transit.

In addition to security enhancements, the Smart Label also includes a temperature monitoring sensor, making it an invaluable tool for industries that rely on precise environmental conditions, such as food logistics and high-end electronics. By continuously tracking and reporting temperature fluctuations, this feature helps maintain the integrity of perishable goods and sensitive shipments, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and minimizing the risk of spoilage or damage.

Designed with simplicity and user-friendliness in mind, the Smart Label is effortlessly activated by simply peeling and applying it to an item, eliminating the need for complex setup procedures or specialized technical knowledge. Unlike many traditional tracking devices, which require extensive configurations, the Smart Label is a plug-and-play solution, making it accessible to businesses of all sizes.

Another key advantage of this innovative tracking label is its reusability, allowing businesses to maximize cost efficiency while reducing electronic waste. Additionally, the Smart Label is certified for air travel, ensuring that shipments remain compliant with aviation safety regulations and can be seamlessly tracked across international borders without disruptions.

Sharath Muddaiah, Head of Portfolio Strategy for IoT Solutions at G+D, commented on the launch:

“G+D has been dedicated to designing robust and innovative solutions for the transport and logistics market, and is the market leader of solar-powered trackers with over 180,000 connected devices in the field. Following the launch of our award-winning first-generation Smart Label solution in 2023, we have been working on the development of an even more compact and highly accurate solution. The G+D Smart Label provides a single end-to-end solution, including dedicated service support and warranty from one source. Our industry has seen many a solution which, once sold, has limited support, and we are here to set a new trend!”

The use cases for the G+D Smart Label are wide-ranging, varying from simple parcel and shipment tracking, to shipping and tracking high-value assets. For example, one early user of the G+D Smart Label technology – Track & Pay – has used the labels to help deliver on its mission of improving visibility into the status of shipments and payments. In building the world’s first IoT-powered B2B payment solution that integrates shipment tracking with payment processing, Track & Pay has been able to leverage the Smart Label technology to automatically trigger a payment upon a shipment’s arrival, ensuring seamless and timely transactions.

Joerg Hoerster, Founder and CEO of TNP Global Trade GmbH, commented:

“We believe in Track & Pay’s ability to revolutionize the global finance supply chain, offering a much more secure and fraud-proof solution than the common letter of credit. The Smart Label’s slick size and active tracking capacity makes it a competitive tracking solution which is why we chose to offer it to our Track & Pay clients.”

The G+D Smart Label is available to purchase directly from G+D and from G+D’s IoT Shop for German and US customers.

G+D will be showcasing the Smart Label at CES on Thursday, Jan. 9. Event visitors are invited to visit the meeting space at IoT M2M Council (IMC) booth #10577, located at the Las Vegas Convention Center in the North Hall of the Expo floor’s IoT Infrastructure Pavilion.
